Dr. Ferguson, our Doctors of Optometry and staff provide patients with high-quality care in a warm and compassionate environment using the most sophisticated advancements in technology. Our refractive surgery delivery system is unsurpassed in patient selection, evaluation, surgical skill, technology, education, and convenient follow-up care.

Leaders in Education and Service

Dr. Ferguson and Dr. Findley introduced the concept of co-management, where optometry serves as the primary eye care provider and ophthalmology serves as the surgical provider and consultant. Their healthcare delivery model has swept across the nation in the past decade, changing forever the delivery of eye care in the United States. Dr. Findley has authored a chapter on co-management in Optometry Clinics and, together with Dr. Ferguson, has lectured to national audiences on the subject. They have practiced together in Lexington, Kentucky for over 25 years.

Dr. Ferguson pioneered the use of sutureless incisions (no stitch) and topical anesthesia (no shots) in cataract surgery and was the first surgeon to offer this technique in Kentucky in 1992. He was instrumental in developing a medical device that improves the margin of safety in cataract procedures. Internationally trained in LASIK years before it became available in the United States, Dr. Ferguson was among the first to perform LASIK surgery in the Bluegrass.

Currently Dr. Ferguson is the president of the American College of Eye Surgeons and serves on the Boards of the American Board of Eye Surgery and the Wilderness Medical Society. He lectures at both national and international eye surgery conferences, has published numerous peer-reviewed articles, and remains active in teaching optometry students, medical students, and ophthalmology residents, in addition to mentoring many practicing ophthalmologists in surgical technique.

The most experienced cataract/refractive surgeon in Kentucky, Dr. Ferguson has performed over 60,000 successful ophthalmic procedures and over 36,000 cataract/implant procedures. He was recently selected by Premier Surgeon as a member of their PS250 – the top 250 surgeons in the nation who are advancing the latest in intraocular lens technology.

Drs. Ferguson, Findley, and R. Marty Smith lecture extensively to optometrists, ophthalmologists, and primary care medical practitioners. They provide clinical and surgical education to optometric externs, ophthalmology residents, and practicing ophthalmologists. They are active in volunteering surgical care for domestic and foreign indigent populations, participating in Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH), Vision U.S.A.—The Kentucky Vision Project, and VisionQuest in the Dominican Republic.
