Mission Statement
Dr. Lance S. Ferguson, Surgical Director, pioneered the use of sutureless incisions (no stitch) and topical anesthesia (no shots) in cataract surgery and was the first surgeon to offer this technique in Kentucky in 1992. He was instrumental in the development of a medical device which improves the margin of safety in the cataract procedure. Internationally trained in LASIK years before it became available in the United States, Dr. Ferguson was among the first to perform LASIK surgery in the Bluegrass. Commonwealth Eye Surgery provides a refractive surgery delivery system unsurpassed in patient selection, evaluation, surgical skill, technology, education, and convenient follow-up care.

History of Commonwealth Eye Surgery

eyeshot3
Commonwealth Eye Surgery was founded by Lance S. Ferguson, M.D. and Howell M. Findley, O.D. Together they introduced the concept of co-management, where optometry serves as the primary eye care provider and ophthalmology serves as the surgical provider and consultant. Their healthcare delivery model has swept across the nation in the past decade, changing forever the delivery of eye care in the United States. Dr. Findley has authored a chapter on co-management in Optometry Clinics and, together with Dr. Ferguson, has lectured to national audiences on the subject. They have practiced together in Lexington, Kentucky since 1985.
