Eye Care Tip of the Month: “Life After LASIK”

The “Eyecare Tip of the Month” is an ongoing series designed to draw upon the experiences and expertise of the local Doctors of Optometry who practice throughout Kentucky. This month’s tip is brought to you by Dr. Karoline Munson of Frankfort Vision Center in Frankfort, KY.

“Having LASIK is a life changing event! It can take a person who has been dependent upon glasses or contacts for longer than they can remember to visual freedom. It is important to remember that while your new vision is fantastic, your eye health is still very important. While LASIK does change your vision, it does not change your risk of sight threatening eye diseases like glaucoma, macular degeneration or cataracts. These common eye diseases can be treated if detected early. An annual eye exam by your optometrist will ensure that your eyes are healthy both inside and out. This is the easiest and best way to protect your investment in LASIK by ensuring your eyes are in the best possible health for many years to come.”

Our Patients Say It Best

This month’s patient spotlight is TV Personality, Lee Cruse. In his own words: “My experience with Commonwealth Eye Surgery was extraordinary! Dr. Ferguson and his staff kept me informed and comfortable during the entire process. Twenty minutes later my life had changed. I knew I would enjoy the convenience of not having to deal with contacts and glasses, but I was not prepared for the jaw dropping vividness of life. The clarity in which I see right now is just remarkable. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I’ve gone from fuzzy black and white to full blown High Definition. Thanks Commonwealth Eye Surgery!!!”

Elephants are the only land mammals that cannot jump. Unlike all other mammals on earth, elephants do not have kneecaps. Therefore, they are unable to bend their legs and acquire the needed propulsion to leave the ground. They are not, however, the only mammals that can’t jump. After all, whales are mammals, too! Eye Care Tip of the Month: “Keeping Our Focus”

The “Eyecare Tip of the Month” is an ongoing series designed to draw upon the experiences and expertise of the local Doctors of Optometry who practice throughout Kentucky. This month’s tip is brought to you by Dr. Scott Smith of Family Eye Care Center in Lawrenceburg, KY.

“Most adults over 40 are familiar with the effects of presbyopia-blurry near vision, fatigue with reading and computers, eyestrain, and headaches-even if they may not be aware of the term. Many seem surprised to find out, however, that children, teens, and even young adults can have similar symptoms from problems of accommodation and convergence. These problems are frequently overlooked in vision screenings but should be detected in a thorough eye exam. Not uncommonly, what at first may appear to be new onset myopia (cannot see well far away) with slightly decreased visual acuity is actually the effect of poor focusing, which needs to be corrected with a reading prescription or multifocals or possibly vision training. See your local optometrist for help with these and other eye and vision issues.”

FOCUS ON THE PATIENT: DICK GABRIEL

This month’s patient spotlight is Dick Gabriel, TV and Radio Sports Personality.

In his own words…
“My experience with LASIK surgery at Commonwealth Eye Surgery was nothing but positive. The pre-surgery info was extensive but not overwhelming, the follow-up care was outstanding and the results were amazing.”

LATEST ADVANCEMENT IN LASIK EYE SURGERY APPROVED BY THE US FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION NOW AVAILABLE AT COMMONWEALTH EYE SURGERY

Commonwealth Eye Surgery is pleased to introduce Advanced Control Eyetracking (ACE) for all of our LASIK patients. The new eye tracker presents many benefits to our patients and makes LASIK safer than ever before.

Eyetracking allows lasers used during LASIK surgery to compensate for eye movements during the procedure, thus adding an important level of assurance. However, no eyetracker has been able to adjust for subtle rotations of the eye that occur during the laser treatment – that is until now!

This new eyetracker locks on to the eye’s unique iris pattern just before the laser treatment begins, and then monitors the pattern throughout the procedure. When rotation of the iris is detected during the treatment the direction of the laser pulses is nearly instantaneously adjusted accordingly. No other laser in the US does this.
This ensures that each laser pulse of the LASIK treatment is delivered to its intended location on the cornea.
To patients, this means that they are getting the added assurance that they are getting the safest and most accurate procedure possible. Commonwealth Eye Surgery is the first and only practice in Central Kentucky who offers Advanced Control Eyetracking technology.

Eye Care Tip of the Month: What is Lid Margin Disease

Lid margin disease (also called blepharitis, chronic staph lid disease, etc.) is quite common and its symptoms come on gradually. Because of this, it is often over-looked by doctors and patients. Sometimes it is also confused with ocular allergies. Symptoms of lid margin disease include crusting of the eyelashes in the morning, red eyes worse in the morning and improving throughout the day, eyes feeling tired and gritty, itching, even lumps within the eyelids called chalazion and styes. Lid margin disease can make contact lens wear uncomfortable. It can cause blurred vision that improves with blinking. More serious side effects are possible. If any of these symptoms sound familiar to you, ask your eye doctor about lid margin disease today.
