Eye Dryness after Lasik

Thursday, May 17th, 2012

Every surgery and recovery period is a different experience for each patient, although every patients needs are the same (better or close to 20/20 vision), the recovery process can be affected by many environmental and personal factors.  At Commonwealth Eye Surgery we aim to arm all of our patients with as much information and help as possible so that the highest results achievable are obtained.

One of the lasik post-op side effects is dryness.  We will give you several packets of artificial tears which we advise you administer artificial tears or eye drops, every 2-4 hours for the first five days after lasik surgery. “When you experience dry eyes after lasik, your vision may be intermittently blurry. This is one of the advantages of artificial tear drops, as they will keep your eyes lubricated, and assist in providing clear vision.” – recent healthcareglobal.com article.

If you experience discomfort, or your eyes become dry or itchy, resist the urge to rub your eyes or squint, it is vital that you keep your eyes closed and in a relaxed state in order to benefit as much as you can from your lasik surgery.  If you have any questions about eye dryness after lasik, please contact us today on 859-224-2655

All about Cataracts and Cataract Surgery

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

Commonwealth Eye Surgery commonly performs many routine eye surgeries, the most popular of which is obviously LASIK, however, mostly older patients, come to us to restore vision and have us perform cataract surgery.  Dr. Lance Ferguson performs cataract surgery at Commonwealth Eye Surgery and below, demonstrates what cataracts are and how surgery from Commonwealth Eyes can restore your vision if you suffer from cataracts. For further information on cataracts and cataract surgery, please visit our website cataract page by clicking here.

What a cataract looks like

A cataract is a “clouding” of the natural crystalline lens inside your eye. It is similar to a steamed-up or blurred focusing lens inside a camera. There are many causes of cataract development, including inherited diseases and diabetes. Most are thought to be caused by sunlight exposure over many years, but cataracts can occur at any age, even in newborn babies.

When the crystalline lens creates difficulty with visual tasks, is causing glaucoma, or is otherwise endangering the eye, we remove it using a surgical procedure called phacoemulsification with implantation. Despite some popular claims and beliefs, cataracts cannot be magically “beamed out” of the eye with the laser.

Phacoemulsification with implantation is the most advanced technique for the removal of cataracts. Your surgeon creates a tiny incision and removes the cataract by using an ultrasonic tip vibrating at 40,000+ times per second.

Dr. Ferguson then positions a permanent implant, selected especially for you, which focuses light similarly to the way that your natural crystalline lens did before it developed into a cataract. In many cases, the implant focuses the light BETTER than your natural crystalline lens. The implant also has an ultraviolet filter to protect the retina in the back of the eye from sunlight injury. Some special implants are less restrictive and provide better near vision (Crystalens) or for those with astigmatism, provide sharper distance vision without glasses (Alcon Toric IOL).

The incision self seals and requires no sutures. Topical anesthesia, or drops alone, makes the standard painful injections unnecessary. The entire procedure requires less than 10 minutes and the recovery period is about three weeks.

Cataract surgery, the most successful surgical procedure in all of modern medicine, is highly effective in the safe restoration of vision.

Go Green for Earth Day 2012!

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

Earth Day is this coming Sunday.  Is there anything that you pledge to do differently to live “more green”?  At Commonwealth Eye Surgery we are ALL about going green, we want to encourage you to throw away those contacts (which can contribute to waste in landfills) and look at ways to not only go green by getting LASIK, but also to go green in your daily life.  So here is a small list of some of the thing Commonwealth Eye Surgery does at our offices and surgical center to reduce, reuse and recycle – where it is SAFE.

We encourage our patients who can now see 20/20 to NOT throw away their glasses, but recycle them by offering them to your nearest hope center or optometrist that performs charity work and can use your old glasses for someone who cannot afford their own pair.  It’s saving the earth and feeling really good about it at the same time!

At Commonwealth Eye Surgery, where we can, for internal purposes only, we try to print on BOTH sides of the paper.  WE save all those printed out emails for another day, then put in a stack in a special printer that has paper already used with printing on one side.  Two prints uses out of each ream of paper, think of HALVING your paper printing costs and also halving your paper waste.

Turning off lights when not in use.  We can’t complain about staying pretty busy at Commonwealth Eye Surgery, that means, lots of patients want to see us and we want to help them get LASIK or PRK or other eye surgery and improve their life, but that also means a lot of patient consult rooms stay lit.  So, when we can, we always try to turn off lights in between seeing patients in our individual consult suites.  Save our electricity bill, and saves bulbs.

These tips aren’t anything you haven’t heard before, but it can be the last straw that you needed in order to put these practices into reality in your home or office, we try to do these things when we can at Commonwealth Eye Surgery, and so should you.

Happy Earth Day 2012 and beyond!

Go Green with Commonwealth Eye Surgery in 2012!
