We have compiled the following Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on cataract surgery, commonly heard from patients at our practice.
When is the right time for cataract surgery?
Cataract removal is generally advised once the cataract causes a significant impact on vision or begins to interfere with everyday activities. Prolonged delays in undergoing cataract surgery may result in the cataract becoming denser and more challenging to remove.
Is a laser used during cataract surgery?
Cataract surgery can be done with or without a laser. Traditional surgery uses a blade, while laser-assisted surgery uses advanced laser technology for more precision. Both are safe and effective, but laser surgery may offer added benefits. Laser cataract surgery offers greater precision, more accurate incisions, and can soften the cataract for easier removal. It can also correct mild astigmatism during the procedure, potentially improving vision and reducing the need for glasses after surgery.
Is cataract surgery painful?
No, cataract surgery is not painful. The procedure is done under local anesthesia with numbing eye drops, so you won’t feel pain during surgery. You may feel slight pressure or mild discomfort, but most patients report the experience as quick and painless. Mild soreness or scratchiness afterward is common but usually resolves within a few days.
Are both eyes done at the same time?
Traditionally, cataract surgery is typically done one eye at a time, with the second eye treated a few days or weeks later. At Commonwealth Eye Surgery, our experienced experts offer the option to do both eyes on the same day for added patient convenience and faster recovery.
What is a cataract implant?
A cataract implant, or Intraocular Lens (IOL), is an artificial lens that replaces your eye's natural, cataract-affected lens. Basic IOL's allows you to avoid needing thick glasses after cataract surgery. Commonwealth Eye Surgery also offers Advanced Lifestyle IOL's as options to greatly reduce your need for glasses at distance, intermediate, and close vision.
Can cataracts come back?
No, cataracts cannot come back after surgery because the cloudy natural lens is completely removed and replaced with an Intraocular Lens (IOL). It is relatively common for patients to develop a posterior capsule opacification (PCO) weeks or months later. This happens when the thin membrane that holds the lens implant becomes cloudy, causing blurred vision similar to a cataract. This can be easily treated with a quick, painless laser procedure called a YAG laser capsulotomy that restores clear vision.
How long does the lens implant last?
Once implanted during cataract surgery, the IOL is permanent and does not wear out or need replacement. It remains clear and stable inside the eye, providing lasting vision correction. The lens itself doesn’t degrade over time.
Are stitches used during cataract surgery?
We perform no-stitch cataract surgery. In rare cases, a stitch may be used and dissolves over time.
When can I drive after cataract surgery?
Your doctor will discuss this with you, but most patients can safely drive within 24 hours after cataract surgery.
Will I need to wear glasses after cataract surgery?
With standard cataract surgery, you will experience better vision but may need glasses for distance and/or up close activities. For patients who wish to reduce their dependence on glasses, there are Advanced Lifestyle Lens options that will allow you to see distance, intermediate, and up close with very little dependence on glasses.
When can I go back to work after cataract surgery?
Most people can return to work within a few days after cataract surgery, especially if their job is not physically demanding. If your work involves heavy lifting, strenuous activity, or exposure to dust and dirt, your doctor may recommend waiting 1 to 2 weeks to allow proper healing.
Can I wear eye makeup after cataract surgery?
It’s generally recommended to wait at least 1 week before wearing eye makeup after cataract surgery. This helps reduce the risk of infection and irritation while your eye is healing.
When can I exercise, play golf, and resume other activities?
Most patients can resume these activities 24 hours after cataract surgery, but you will need to avoid lifting heavy objects for at least the first week. Your doctor will discuss in detail restrictions after cataract surgery.
When can I go swimming after cataract surgery?
You can typically resume swimming two weeks after cataract surgery. Water aerobics is generally safe to start one week post-surgery, provided you avoid submerging your head underwater.
When can I resume using my normal medications?
Aspirin and other blood thinners can typically be safely resumed the day after cataract surgery.
