December 6, 2010Lexington, KY (October 12, 2010) — The first Softec HD Intraocular Lens Implant in Kentucky was recently implanted by Lance S. Ferguson, MD, at Commonwealth Eye Surgery in Lexington, KY. The intraocular lens, or IOL, manufactured by Lenstec of St. Petersburg, Florida, is the latest in lens implants.
The new implant enables doctors to more precisely fit cataract patients’ needs, improving their visual outcomes. Current intraocular lenses in use are manufactured in 0.50 power increments, while the Softec HD is available in 0.25 power increments. The implant is thus up to three times more precise than other current cataract replacement lenses manufactured under ISO standards.
Dr. Ferguson is among the first implanters in the U.S. to implant this lens and the first in Kentucky. Lenstec chose Dr. Ferguson due to his long-standing clinical expertise in the development of new implant technologies. Dr. Ferguson was one of the first ophthalmic surgeons in Kentucky to routinely implant foldable lenses, which now account for 99% of all lens implant surgeries in the U.S.
“The Softec HD certainly offers our patients their greatest opportunity for the ‘best vision’ after lens implant surgery due to higher precision. We are thrilled to have been chosen to perform the procedure first and look forward to adding this new technology,” Dr. Ferguson said.
