February 23, 2023The Future of Cataract Surgery: RxSight Light Adjustable Lens (LAL)
September 12, 2023Hi, my name is Angie and I’m the Education nurse at Commonwealth Eye Surgery. I just want to go over the most common questions that I hear from our patients so that we can get some answers for you.
“What lens should I choose at your evaluation?”
Our specialized optometrist will recommend all the options, they’ll go over everything and they’ll recommend what’s right for you.
“When will I be able to see?”
Many patients report improved vision immediately after surgery, however, everyone’s experience is different. Optimal vision should occur by four weeks.
“Will I be asleep and what type of anesthesia will I receive?”
You will be very comfortable during your procedure. And many patients report being very relaxed or even asleep, they will take a nap. This type of anesthesia is called conscious sedation.
“Can I eat or drink before surgery?”
You can eat before cataract surgery unless you’re scheduled for general anesthesia. However, we do recommend starting with a light meal after surgery to prevent nausea.
“How long will surgery take?”
The surgery itself is brief. However, your appointment can take up to four hours. That includes prep and recovery.
“Does it hurt and what can I take for pain?”
Generally, there is no pain at all with this type of surgery and over-the-counter medication is recommended for any discomfort that you may experience.
“Can I wear my glasses after surgery?”
Your OD will address your need for glasses at your one day post-op appointment.
“How long do I have to take off work?”
Generally one to two days. That just depends on your job and your work environment.
“When can I drive?”
Your optometrist will instruct you when you can drive at your one day post-op appointment. For the most part, they clear everyone to drive on the following day.
“How long do I have to do drops?”
You will do drops for 28 days. This is extremely important to do after surgery to prevent infection, reduce inflammation, and promote healing during your post-op period. You will get your drops on the day of your surgery.
